The locked up Qin - at Shosoin, Bell Yung on Tsai DY's teaching methods, teacher and Last Literati?
Source: swannbb.blogspot.com --- Friday, June 19, 2009
Next qin in DGM collection - from Shosoin , which pieces should I put into this Qin? It has been locked into the Shosoin, Nara. Can only be aired in Oct for a short while - maybe a month? per year. Friends of Guqin site A very stylised and succint site for guqin. Layout is at once clean and sober, with little text, gives you room to breathe. Choice of images are also sober unlike the quick and easy "cultural" look of certain sites with old fonts galore. This one is clean and calm, elegant correct to the Qin spirit. On teaching and learning guqin, a text on one special teacher, Tsai De Yun as told by Bell Yung in his book " The Last of China's literati " (Isnt that rather unbelievable? There are many people in China.) Anyway, I enjoyed this text and think, isnt this what an ideal "teaching" situation is like? For both the teacher and the student? We always think as a student, who is the right teacher, what we look for in a teacher... but we never think from the part of the teacher, what can we bring to the teacher? Is a teacher "a reading machine" for Doctoral candidates? A teacher is to deliver everything for the ease of the student? Is a teacher a friend? Or student are careful when to let their teacher into their world? Is it proper to hang out with students? Maybe in very clearly pre-defined contexts, such as here, in her salon, playing guqin, tea and sweets. Very clear. She does not go outside and have tea outside? Walk on the natur ...

Literati.. very GC
Source: tonyparkblog.blogspot.com --- Saturday, May 30, 2009
It's just as well my good mate and fellow Pan Macmillan author Peter Watt was trapped in his home by rising floodwaters and couldn't make it to this years Gold Coast council literati writers' event. If he had, I might be dead. Hung over, Legion of Fans (LOF) is what I am right now, as I type this from the grandly named but still fairly unglitzy Gold Coast International Airport (the airport formerly known as Coolangatta). The last time Peter Watt and I caught up for a drink we pulled stumps at four in the morning and by that time Peter had convinced me that it would be a good idea to start my next book (IVORY, the one due out August 1) with a scene where modern day pirates hijack a huge car carrying ship. When I eventually sobered up I thought to myself that no one would believe a car carrier being hijacked (in order to steal its load of factory-fresh automobiles), but real-life Somali pirates later seized a ship carrying tanks for the Kenyan Army, so I figured my pirates could, after all, get away with making off with a few Hummer H3s. Even with Peter's absence (which I really was very disappointed about), I still managed to end up talking Swahili by the end of the literati Dinner. I had an absolutely sensational time and have decided that literati is the best writers' festival I've ever been to (in fact, it's the only one, but from what I know of the others, this one is still the best). At the dinner forty authors (all much more famou ...

"Uy, nag-Dumaguete workshop ka lang ibang-iba ka na ha," a friend of mine said when I arrived, sporting a ponytail that made me look even more like a woman. "Di ka na ma-reach!" another friend said. I sat down on a chair, puzzled and confused. I poked around the platter of chicharon bulaklak and wondered if [...] ...
